Read DLMS meters over serial connections
Lightweight, reliable polling of smart meters connected by RS-232, RS-485, or optical probe to a single port.
What it is
DLMS Direct Serial Service connects to DLMS/COSEM smart meters over direct serial connections configured in the platform database. Each serial connection (COM port) runs independently and reads multiple meters sequentially. Decoded meter data — consumption, demand, device state, alarms — flows instantly into the platform's analytics and visualization systems, where utilities and industrial operators track energy in real time. This is the serial-wired equivalent of DLMS TCP polling: same protocols, same meter data, wired instead of networked.
Key benefits
Direct meter access without networking
Connect smart meters via local serial cables (RS-232, RS-485, optical), avoiding network infrastructure, firewall rules, and external connectivity. Ideal for retrofit installations and air-gapped sites.
Fast, responsive meter reads
Each meter is read sequentially per cycle with 10-second timeouts. No polling-queue delays — readings reach your dashboard and analytics in seconds, not minutes.
Scalable to many meters per port
Multi-drop multiple DLMS meters on one RS-485 line. The service manages port exclusivity and sequential reads automatically — add meters in the platform database, service adapts on next reconcile cycle.
Built-in reliability and health monitoring
Automatic failure recovery, per-connection idle sleep (no wasted CPU), health endpoints for integration with your monitoring systems. Graceful shutdown drains in-flight reads.
Capabilities
- Poll DLMS/COSEM meters over RS-232, RS-485, and optical probe connections
- Multi-drop sequential reads on a single COM port with automatic port management
- Configurable baud rates, open/close policies, and read timeouts per connection
- Broadcast decoded meter data (consumption, demand, device state, alarms) to all platform subscribers
- Liveness and health reporting via REST health endpoints
- Per-connection and per-controller logging for troubleshooting
- Scheduled polling with sleep optimization for idle connections
